Classic Hindu Scriptures and Literature

Blue Dove offers several books under the category of Hindu literature, ranging from the ancient oral tradition of the Vedas to the longest recorded story in the history of mankind, the Mahabharata. Each holds the wisdom of classic Indian philosophy. In addition to our selection of traditional texts, we also offer more contemporary books on various subjects relating to Hindu faith and worship.

The Bhagavad Gita--A classic story taken from the Mahabharata, the Gita depicts Arjuna's conversations with the god Krishna.

The Mahabharata--The definitive Hindu epic, containing thousands of verses and spiritual guidance on the problems of human life.

The Ramayana-- Another epic story translated from Sanskrit about a prince who must face several spiritual trials in order to save his kidnapped wife.

Srimad Bhagavatams--The Srimad Bhagavatam, or Bhagavata Purana, relates the story of the childhood and youth of the avatar Krishna, as the Mahabharata tells Krishna.

Puranas--These traditionally contain the lives of various incarnations of God. Mahabharata and Ramayana are considered to be maha puranas, great epics.

The Vedas--Originally an oral tradition, these are ancient texts that epitomize classic Hindu literature.

The Upanishads--Part of the Vedic verses, the Upanishads emphasized the concepts of Brahman and Atman, and of achieving bliss by spiritually becoming one with a single Supreme Being.

Other Indian Literature and Texts--Justin Abbott Translations, Kashmir Saivism, and Gaudiya Math
