The
Ramayana
|
|
On one level, the Ramayana is the epic story of a prince whose
wife, Sita, is kidnapped, and the resulting battle to rescue her from
the demon king. On another level, it is the story of a soul devoted to
God who is beguiled by maya, illusion, and as a result is separated from
its Beloved. Here, the story is of the soul's pining for God and how God
comes running to the rescue of his devotee. Like many Indian spiritual
stories, there is a level for everyone, from the peasant to the mystic.
The original Sanskrit version is attributed to Valmiki. Around 1500, Tulsidas
wrote a version in the common vernacular, now much loved and performed
throughout Northern India.
