The Upanishads

The Vedic tradition was further developed by the Upanishad writings, verses especially rich in philosophical discussion and theory. These "secret scriptures" were originally an oral tradition, and later were written in Sanskrit, beginning about the 7th century B.C.E. They introduced several influential ideas, including the Brahman, the concept of a single God, and the Atman, one's true self or soul. According to the Upanishads, enlightenment was achieved only when the Atman became one with the Brahman. These scriptures were a means of teaching Vedic philosphy through the conversations of the ancient sages.
