The Vedas

The Vedas are the most ancient of the classic literature of Hinduism. Originally they were passed down in an oral tradition of chanters who memorized sections and they were only written down long after originally composed. They are in an early form of Sanskrit, which is as understandable to readers of later Sanskrit as English from the Middle Ages is comprehensible to modern-day Engish speakers. Topics are often obscure to the modern Western reader. We do not recommend these books to people looking for introductions to Indian spiritual literature.
